Bonnie Raitt - “When the Spell is Broken”
Make that a great Richard Thompson tribute album. This ain’t just Bonnie, the Blind Boys of Alabama are in there, too, though they have their own track as well. This is one of those rare cases of a blues record that sounds good when it’s this slick, and it’s not a mistake—it’s a purpose-built machine. In some ways it’s exactly what mid-90s production always meant to achieve. I can’t help but interpret it like a good soup, built from the ground up and only needing embellishments on the broth. I won’t belabor the point by actually describing this as a recipe, but understand that this is a polished-ass blues song on a tribute album and I respect it.
